1000 years ago, there was no electricity, and virtually no way to live without the help and support of other people. Life expectancy was also very short, around 35 years. If you could give your daughter (assume you had a daughter) one “genetic gift” to survive in this environment, what would it be? Also, assume that you want her to have your grandchildren.

Intelligence
Physical Attractiveness
A gene to avoid cancer
A gene to avoid obesity
A gene for a friendly personality
Athletic ability
Other (please specifiy)

I am working on some preliminary research ideas here.... please just give honest thoughtful answers. No trolls...this is work I really want to pursue.

I would send her to apprentice with a hag. Who needs magic tricks?

Back in those days, "hag" was a term of reverence for women who studied plants as medicines and practiced midwifery, ie. they were scientists.

Not only that, but such women were respected in their societies...until, of course, along came the christians who called them "witches" and killed them, driving "pagan" Europe into disease and male domination.

Women are 50% of the population and thus 50% of the brains. One has to wonder how far humanity would have advanced had patriarchal societies not existed and women had studied and worked for millennia.

A gene for adaptability. The ability to adjust easily to changing surroundings and climates. With the uncertainty of day to day living, that would be the best thing I could ever pass on.

Intelligence, most certainly.

Nothing else would be terribly handy without a mind to power it. Also, with a good enough mind, most other obstacles are readily overcome. Note... I said "most".

However, without a decent intellect, success at anything is nothing but a whim of fate.

Physical Attractiveness - - think about time time.... men didnt care about a woman's intelligence. if the goal is to have grandchildresn, attractiveness is most important. plus you need an attractive woman to get favors from others more easily... people do whatever attractive women want... men are like sheep when it comes to a claudia shiffer. she'd be more likely to survive and procreate if attractive

Intelligence. Specifically the ability to use logic to understand concepts and deal with concepts. Plus the intelligence on how to deal with fellow humans (call it EQ or social intelligence).
