I'm a new mom to a 5 day old baby boy.Since I was pregnant I've heard of staying up all night the first few months with a crying baby.
My son sleeps all day all night.I wake him up about every 2.5-3 hours to feed him and change him as often as possible but he never wants to stay awake.
I feed him and he's passed out again. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

I had a c-section and the pain and swelling i'm going through is unbareabe and my doc has me on Ibuprofen 800mg and Percocet.I am breast feeding could this effect the baby and could this possibly be why he sleeps all the time?

I have two children. My first would never sleep, my second would never wake up, just like yours! Every child is different.
Remember that every medicine you take will pass in small percentage to your milk, but it's much better to ask your doctor, it may not effect the baby too much.
I had a high fever once when I was breast feeding and my doctor gave me the right things.
It takes a lot of patience to be a mother, but we all did it so you can do it! Take care. It will be gratifying!

Babies all sleep as much as they need, some more than others, though i am pretty sure that percoset is also causing it. Did you tell your doctor you are breastfeeding? My doctor wouldn't give me anything stronger than Tylenol and Ibuprofen while i was breastfeeding, and if i had to take a stronger medicine i had to pump as much as i could before i started taking it so the baby wouldn't get it. Since i did that my baby only slept like that the first 2 days, then was awake more and more every day. by 7 days he was only napping every 2 hours. I would just check with your doctor (get a 2nd opinion if you are still doubtful) and make sure that your medicine isn't having a bad affect on the baby. he could have a reaction to the medicine other babies might not. Most babies even 5 days old will want to wake up and play with you and look at you and thier new surroundings, so i do recommend going to the doctor and make sure things are ok. If your doctor does say it's ok then great! you just have a very relaxed easy baby. (better than those that stay up all day all night screaming!!) Good Luck and CONGRATULATIONS on your new baby boy! the next 18 years will be the best of your life...

Babies that little do sleep a lot, as long as you are waking him up every few hours to feed, and he's eating enough by the diapers, he should be fine. You did tell your doctor that you would be breastfeeding? If you did, he should have given you meds that wouldn't affect the baby too badly (pretty sure the ibuprofen is fine, I had that in the hospital, the Perc is probably fine as well.) Babies usually sleep almost constantly the first couple of weeks, then they start to want to stay awake a bit. The 'crying baby' phase usually comes at about 3-4 weeks old and lasts until about 3 months old, if they get it, some don't.

My "baby" is nearly 17, but he did sleep a lot when he was that small. Boy, things changed drastically when he was about 6 weeks old though. He seldom cried, but the little weasel didn't sleep through the night again until he was over a year old - just wanted to play and "cat nap" all day and night. He still doesn't require much sleep.

My daughter was my crier, but her sleep patterns were great. Even as a toddler, she would grab her blanket and head off to bed on her own - no problems. Funny thing, at 14, she still has very regimented sleep and wake times. Kids are such gifts...but they grow up so quickly. Enjoy your little man...mine is still my buddy.

As for the meds, check with your doctor about any questions you have - new moms don't need any added concerns more than the ones inherent to the job. You might be able to find some info on-line too. Be good to yourself and take all the help that is offered to you. You don't have to be SuperMom - give your body time and rest to heal. C-Sections are common, but it is still surgery...rest, rest, rest!!

Newborns sleep alot sometimes up to about 15-20 hours a day and will wake up to be fed in between then fall asleep during feeding. my doctor told me to undress my baby so he'd get cold and wake up to eat. He'll start staying up more as he gets a little older. Enjoy your rest to heal. Before you know you'll be chasing him around trying to keep him out of trouble.

My sister gave me a book when my son was born and it was a complete lifesaver. Particularly the feeding and sleeping schedule. I didn't do the "let the baby cry" thing but everything else was very helpful. I highly reccomend it.

Congratulations on your new baby.
Yes, the pain meds would make your baby sleepy. I am surprised that your doctor would have you on these meds knowing that you are nursing your baby. See if you can ease off of the Percocet. Also, when your baby is needing to be fed, unwrap him and just keep him in diaper and shirt so that he is cool. He will be more awake if he is cool than all swaddled up in a blanket. You can also touch his feet while he is nursing to try to keep him awake. Drink lots of liquids to keep you peeing (to flush meds) as well as to keep up with breast milk.

Another thought is, if you are not taking pain meds at night, you might consider pumping in the morning before you take your pain meds and then bottle feed the pumped breast milk.

I hope you heal quickly.

Good luck.

You have a good one, stop complaining. Our first child was like that, put her in her crib tell her good night and she was out, if she got hungry, she would let you know. She didn't even cry the first week, my wife cried more then her. The second child made up for her, came out crying and wouldn't stop, couldn't sleep cause she was always hungry. Complete opposites.
Oldest is now 14 and very mature for her age, not to mention 6 feet tall. Second is 12 and has FINALLY stopped crying.lol

Your meds very well could be having a calming effect on the child and helping him sleep. Talk to your pediatrician.
