I own both and to me the PS3 can play way more games than the XBOX 360. I do not even think half my XBOX games will play on the 360 while the PS3 has a very high rate of games that can be played on it.

PS1 and PS2 games have a very high percentage of backwards compatibility.
The Xbox 360 has absolutely abysmal backwards compatibility. 95% of sports games will not work. A lot of other genres just don't work either. Xbox.com has a list of games that are for sure backwards-compatible.
The Wii is 100% compatible with Gamecube games, but you often need a Gamecube controller. Some cartridge games (N64, Super Nintendo, etc.) have been ported so that they can be downloaded for a few bucks and played on the Wii.
