Besides being the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV is a genetic code surrounded by a protein shell. In other words, it is not a living organism. The protein shell protects the genetic code until it penetrates a cell and then the code absorbs into the living host. The immune system is slowly disabled until AIDS occurs. If a person does not survive, it is due to another illness, such as pneumonia, which the body cannot fight off because of HIV.
