Generally speaking they are synonyms, except for slut, which can simply be a woman who is less than chaste. A whore is usually the same as a prostitute or hooker. The difference between the words is acceptability in public use. Prostitute is a technically accurate and correct word that is not considered impolite. Hooker is just another word that means more or less the same thing, and is usually not impolite. Whore is considered a bad or impolite word. Whores/prostitutes/hookers accept money or other favors for sex. Sluts usually just give it away. Not that I have all that much experience with all of this, you understand. I'm a journalist and a writer. Without describing all my research I will say I have sought to know many things and this subject has interested me since I was an adolescent.

A prostitute is generally found anywhere there are men with money to spend. A hooker makes me think of a truck stop or biker bar. A ho is anybody that will do it for any kind of personal gain, not necessarily money.

All the same thing, but different socioeconomic groups refer to them using different terms. You would rarely expect to hear a college professor refer to them as a "ho", but you probably would not think twice if you heard that term on "the street". Whether they arrive in a limosine wearing a designer gown and carrying a silk purse stocked with condoms OR if they stand on a street corner in the worst part of town wearing a trampy outfit held together with a saftey pin and could care less if the "John" uses a rubber--they are still the same thing, regardless of whether referred to as a prostitute or a ho. They are women/men who have chosen that profession, for whatever reason.

Hooker
A synonym for prostitute. The term became popular during the Civil War. The women involved were camp followers. General "Fighting Joe" Hooker approved their presence in order to boost the morale of his men.
Prostitute
Prostitution is the sale of sexual services (examples: oral sex, sexual intercourse) for money. A person selling sexual services is a prostitute, a type of sex worker. In a more general sense of the word, anyone selling their services for a cause thought to be unworthy can be described as prostituting themselves.

A prostitute can be any female who sells her body for money. She can work at a strip club, a brothel, or on the street.
A hooker is a prostitute who works on the street. You wouldn't call a stripper who is also a prostitute who works at a club a hooker.
A ho can be any female who sleeps around, usually for free.
