When I was a child, we had Lincoln's Birthday and Washington's birthday, now we just have Presidents Day. I really don't think that King did more than Lincoln. There wouldn't even be a King without Lincoln. Yet somehow he got his own day, What happened?

I am not saying that MLK was not a good man, I just don't understand why Washington and Lincoln got their days taken away so he could have a day all by himself. Just doesn't seen fair.

It was first proposed to become a federal holiday in 1968 due to MLK's activism on behalf of labor unions. Though the bill did not pass at first, 6 million signatures were collected during a petition in 1981 at the Rally for Peace Press Conference. Afterwards, Congress passed the bill into law with an overwhelming majority, in spite of opposition from Reagan.

So, really, WE, the American people, made it a holiday. You have to admit that's pretty awesome.

The politicians decided to combine Lincoln and Washington's birthday holidays since their birthdays were only 10 days a part (heaven forbid Americans should get another paid holiday!!!). They also thought it was a good way to honor all the men who had served our nation as president.

I disagree. MLK was a remarkable leader who's influence and leadership during the civil rights era changed America for the better. He deserves his day as a modern day American hero.

"There wouldn't even be a King without Lincoln" WTF does that have to do with anything? There wouldn't have even been a Lincoln without Washington, either.

maybe you should learn more about history instead of complaining. lincoln was reluctant to do what he did and only freed the slaves as a last resort. he was a rich white man who did what was expected of him. king stood up against his enemies and countered them through peaceful tactics. lincoln and washington have their faces on money, king has one day. if you ask me, he should get a whole week.

He died and people realized that he was a good man that had a good vision.

I remember him while growing up. Frankly, I thought he was a troublemaker originally. Where there were riots and trouble, so he was there.

In retrospect, he called out the wrongs and what needed to be done to fix them. He was a wise man who took action, not a trouble maker. Then some moron bigot killed him. .....you don;t know what you have until you lost it...and so we honor him.
