Cross-dressing is when a person dresses in the clothing of the opposite sex. The reasons why some people cross-dress are very differently from person to person. Plus, it is generally more acceptable for women to wear men's clothing than it is for men to wear women's clothes.

As the others have said, cross dressing is the wearing of clothing typically worn by the opposite sex. A person's reasons for doing it can range from simply liking the look or feel of a single garment, all the way to wanting to appear to be a person of the opposite gender in every way.
Don't worry, cross dressing has nothing to do with your sexuality. Cross dressing does not make you gay or anything else. That is a separate issue. The majority of male to female cross dressers are completely heterosexual men. Sexuality is between the legs, gender is between the ears, and what makes you feel good is between you and yourself.
So just enjoy it, and be careful.

It's wearing the clothes of the opposite sex. It's usually more obvious when it's a man dressing like a woman (women can pretty much wear whatever they like so them "cross dressing" is'nt as obvious unless they are trying to hide their bust and appear as men).
It doesn't make you gay, it doesn't make you a bad person, you won't go to hell, etc, etc.
People do it for various reasons. I'm not sure about the "compulsive" description above. I'm a crossdresser and I enjoy doing it now and then and it has many components to it (reasons why I do it but I won't go into that here -- that's a whole other discussion!).
If it's something you want to do don't let others get you down with their negative propaganda. You have to justify it and be comfortable with it yourself - that's the most important part and probably the hardest.
Good luck.

Cross-dressing is when you wear clothes intended for the opposite gender. Normally guys will cross-dress to be silly, role-play, or just to get a reaction out of others. For the most part this is considered fun and safe... However, there is a dark side to cross dressing and that is the compulsive cross-dresser.
The compulsive cross-dresser is identified as a male who feels a NEED to wear woman's clothes. He can't stop, like an addict going for his drugs, he needs his fix. When he wears woman's clothes his brain releases a series of neurotransmitters which produce a feeling of well-being, pleasure, sexual gratification and self-identity. He is a normal heterosexual male with an addiction. If he doesn't fight his addiction then he will work hard at developing a female alter-ego, he will give "her" a name and will even fall in love with his alter-ego. As a heterosexual he will usually get married and will want his wife to encourage and participate in his crossdressing. However she will soon tire of this and complain that she feels like his second love. If they have children then the children will be taught to keep daddy's secret or suffer the ridicule of their peers. At some time the cross-dresser will experience a crisis where he will take greater risks with his cross-dressing, he will try ways of looking more feminine, he may consider surgery. He will even consider leaving his wife and family to pursue his first love.
Addictive cross-dressing is destructive and does you no favors.

Cross dressing is when someone wears clothes the opposite sex would normally wear. The most common example is homosexual males wearing female clothing (dresses, skirts, etc). However, it can go both ways.
