As a U.S. army soldier i would prefer the Armalite M16A4 to the SKS because of the firepower, and reliability. It is an easier weapon to clean and maintain. It is reliable in combat and will fire every single time it is need if kept in proper care, there are a large amount of tatical objects that can be fitted to the M16A4 as well making a versitle weapon.

How much money are you looking to spend? An m-16 is a fully-automatic rifle that costs thousands of dollars, finger-printing, much federal paperwork, locating a class 3 dealer to sell you one in your area, a federal tax stamp if you are approved to own the m-16 that costs $200.00 and is specifically for that rifle with that serial number. Being a 223 cal. rifle, it has a good bit of range, not alot of recoil causing a great deal of accuracy as well. It's "way cool!"
The semi-auto version is also very expensive, but not nearly the price of a full auto m-16. It doesn't require as much paperwork or expense to obtain, also if ever you needed to sell it, the person you would sell it to does not have to find a dealer to do the transfer, (all that paperwork) or pay for another $200.00 tax stamp as the tax stamp is non-transferrable. The semi-auto is an AR-15. It does come in many different versions as well and the price can vary greatly.

An SKS is available in commonly a 7.62 x 39 mm round. It is quite like a 308 caliber (7.62 x 51) which will mean less range than a 223 caliber round. However at a closer range, it has more power. Not to say that it is not a good long range round, it is just not as long range as the 223 caliber due to standard bulletweight. The Typical SKS round has more weight causing the trajectory of the round to drop lower at a closer distance thus affecting long-long range accuracy.

There are different versions of the SKS as well. The longer barrelled, heavier version will naturally affect the recoil and accuracy of this gun as well. They also make lighter weight ammo that help the range of distance (less power of course) to be a more competitive round for accuracy at longer distances.

Fully automatic weapons are fun to shoot, yet the paperwork, added expense, hassle etc . . . is a royal pain. Any class 3 fire arm can also take from 6 months up to 3 years to obtain the okay to obtain the weapon after paying for the gun, and paying for the tax stamp.

Personally, I would prefer a match grade heavy barrell ar-15 if I were to choose between just these 2 weapons. (I would rather have an M-14 308 match grade heavy barrell. 'Just my personal opinion, not that any onr asked for it.)

The SKS also is available in 223. Either caliber SKS is going to be alot cheaper than any ar-15.

Had fun shooting the M-16 in the military but I own an SKS and it is one of the sweetest shooting rifles I have ever shot. That's saying alot because I am a very avid shooter and have been all of my life.

I've actually fired an M16 (8 years - U.S. Army) and they are a great weapon. I don't know about an SKS.
