I have 2 African Cichlids 1 Yellow Lab (which I believe is male) the other is Orange and I think is Female. + a few other fish.
I have to keep the Orange Cichlid separated in the tank because the Yellow Lab will go after it...(3 days ago the Yellow Lab, burtally attacked my BETA and it died).(Which I normally keep separated, but let it in with the other fish so I could clean its net, which I do once a week. by the time I finished cleaning the net all of the Betas Fins were bitten off)
Anyways. the Cichlids seemed to be doing ok, When the Orange one was hovering at the top of the tank in the corner.
I put it back in its area.
Yesterday, I noticed what looked like white flakes..or Shedding scales..
I figured it had gotten bitten and the bites were infected so I today I went and bought ICK medicine..
It seems to be ok...Oh and when I put it back in its area, it stopped hovering at the top and started swimming around in its area.
No other fish have White on their scales.

Orange Cichlid kept separated in Breeders Net in tank, new betta (just got another one tonight kept in separate Breeders net).
The other fish in tank. are:
2 Red Tailed Tin Foil Barbs.
1 Tiger Barb
2 Cory Cats
1 Catfish with the long whiskers
1 Sucker
1 Yellow lab African Cichlid.
***These fish all get along no fin nipping etc.***
Have had the tank 6 months. Tank is 10 GL.
Change Filter Cartridge every 2 weeks, but rinse out everyother night.
Clean both Breeders nets every wkend.
Water is Crystal Clear..Feed at least 2 times a day using 4 different foods.
I dont do partial water changes because...I have to put water in the tank once a week, due to evaporation (in back of tank lid, big open spot because filter is small (10 GL fliter)and the rest of the lid does not sit flush because of the 2 Breeders nets)

It sounds like damaged scales from fighting, which cichlids are prone to do. Ich is generally small spots (think salt) over the fish's body.

I hope you've learned something, but let me state it plainly. Do not mix aggressive fish species. Not for a little while, not for ten minutes, not for one minute. Never. If you do get a betta in the future, it needs to live in a tank all alone, or with small, non-aggressive, non-nippy tankmates.

How large is your cichlid tank? Cichlids will often chase each other as a show of dominance, but actual fighting is rarer. I wouldn't keep a pair of cichlids that size in anything less than a 40 gallon tank.

Ick looks like grains of salt, or very tiny white bumps. Often you'll notice your fish making an odd movement called flashing to scratch against the tank decorations. It's really contagious, so you'd start seeing it on other fish very quickly.

Stress coat or Melafix would be a better treatment than ick meds if the spots were infected bites. Remember to remove the activated charcoal from your tank before adding any medication, otherwise the charcoal will remove the meds the first time the water cycles through the filter.

If you have a digital camera, maybe you should take pictures of the white flakes and show them to the fish person at your local pet store.

Fish are more susceptible to disease when they're stressed. If you're having to keep the fish seperated in your tank, it doesn't sound like they're a good mix to keep. You might want to start over with a couple of fish that would get along well...your local pet store could advise you on this.

sure goldfish may have Ick. It sounds like salt is on your fish. the medication that I actual have used interior the previous is speedy remedy. you are able to purchase it at any fish keep or Walmart. yet there are more than a number of diverse manufacturers that do the same aspect. Ick does not seem as if cotton. If that is what evidently like your fish has columnaris. it truly is a fungus that grows on the fish frequently on their fins. If that is what you've try Binox it truly is a product from Jungle Laboratories. With any drugs study the instructions. Bionx does not effect scaleless fish. Scaleless are any type of tetra and any type of catfish.
