In the winter, with heaters running, the relative humidity is lower. The dry air makes it easier for the static build up and discharge. Get used to it until it warms up.

Humidity keeps static charge from forming. The humid air conducts the static charge and therefore you don't notice static, nor get a shock.

In the winter, the relative humidity inside drops. The cold air outside tends to keep the relative humidity of the air high, which is why you see fog and frost (from humid air condensing on objects). It is like squeezing the water out of the air. The outside old air, which is a huge volume, infiltrates into the inside environment. However, when it does, that cold humid air warms up with no source of humidity. The resulting warm inside air is MUCH drier since the relative humidity goes down.

Anyway, that dry air is very conducive to static electricity. Rub your feet on wool carpet and shock people easily

Has a cold front passed over you recently? Sounds like there was a sudden drop in relative humidity, leading to an increased buildup of static electricity, possibly in your carpets?

Splash out on a pair of leather soled shoes - rubber and synthetics are just asking for trouble on a nylon or PET carpet when the relative humidity is low.
