Why was she so adamently against Allie's relationship with Noah? She even said that she missed her own boyfriend and pined over him even into adulthood. Most parents would want their kids to have whatever they themselves couldn't.

Because she thought wealth and social status was more important than love she felt that staying with Noah would not give her the life she deserved, she did not believe love could be enough and later she realized she could have been wrong and that is when she shows her daughter of her youth experiences and helps her to make her decision by letting her choose. This is an excellent movie very heart-warming but most of Nicholas Sparks are.

Maybe she knows the pain she is feeling from loosing her guy and does not want her daughter to feel that way. I am a mother and I too have a daughter and as most parents will say, no one is ever good enough for their baby. Maybe that explains it too, once a young girl grows up and falls in love, they move away from their parents and they are no longer their little girl. So it could just be a fear of loosing them.
The Notebook is a great movie, and just talking about it makes me want to watch it again.

She wants for her daughter what all parents want for their children but, before he went to war, they were living in the Depression and that was a sobering experience for everyone. His prospects didn't look good to them at that time, so they wanted her to marry rich and not have to worry about scraping by.
