It depends on what types of stories you like. I am going to recommend science fiction novelists for children as those are my favorites. Any book by Madeline L'Engle, Lois Lowry, J.K. Rowling, Ursula K. LeGuin, David Eddings, and Ann McCaffrey, should start you out fairly well.

The one you are thinking of is called Corduroy.

As far as other stories are concerned, phatgirl6 has some good suggestions.
