Mack has both a 6 and 8 cylinder engines as a factory option, though the 6 cylinder engine is more common in their trucks and all manufacturers.
A little known fact about Mack trucks is the type of bulldog on the hood used to tell whether the truck was manufactured with a Genuine Mack engine or other makers engine such as Caterpillar Detroit or Cummins. If the bulldog was "Gold" it meant the truck was fitted with a Mack Engine, all others had "Chrome" Bulldog hood ornaments. After 1980 the hood ornaments were all chrome no matter the engine manufaturer.
Back to your initial question....Most Engines in over the road type trucks are about 600 hp, turbocharged, most have aftercoolers and have 6 cylinders with an approximate bore of about 6 inches diameter.

today you will find inline 6 cylinder turbo diesels under the hoods of most "BIG TRUCKS"(this is how truckers refer to class 8 vehicles or 18 wheelers) of 700-855 cubic inches and 350-600 hp and 1350-2050 ft lb torque .the main players are CAT,CUMMINS and DETRIOT with a few macks and volvos thrown in for good measure! Kenworth and Peterbilt (PACCAR) or Freightliner neither one build engines ,they install what you pick at the dealership from CAT or Cummins or Detriot

6 cylinders--- most semi's have in-line 6 cylinder diesel engines that have been built in the last 15 years. Mack--is the only one that makes it's own engines of the names you gave-- under its own name. Even then, they do install engines from different manufactures.

It kind of depends on the type of engine, cause any truck can have pretty much any engine(cummins,detroit,caterpi... etc) Usually 12 cylinders i would say.
