No they can't swim(learned by accident). They can develop a fungus because it takes them so long to dry. Took me longer to dry my chin than my poodle. That is why they roll in dust as it gets to the skin and keeps them dry.

Edit: you need lava dust not sand or any other substance for thier bath.

Listen to the other poster. Chinchilla fur is NOT supposed to get wet---their fur is very dense and not water-resistant...a wet chinchilla can EASILY catch pnemonia and DIE.

Chinchillas live in trees in mountainous regions. They do NOT swim.

NO!!!
Water ruins their fur!
Never get a Chinchilla wet.
EVER!

Look here: chinnet.com for better info on chinchilla care.

EDIT
Diatomaceous Earth is extremely poisionous. Use only dust made specifically for chinchillas.

They naturally live in cool, dry desert terrain of the Andies. I don't imagine this is a nessicary skill for survival and if they could I wouldn't expect her to thrive at it or even enjoy it. BUT most animals can, the only thing that I can think of right now that can't are Whites Tree Frogs.

Probably, though the poor thing most likely wouldn't like it. My guinea pig I had when I was a kid could swim. I found out after my sister (she was 4) dumped it in the pond out back. She (the guinea pig) was terrified, but she swam just fine.

They can swim but they hate it. They need to be given baths in dust (diatomaceous earth) Not water!
