You are about to enter a long cycle of the ball and chain - WORKING!!! Whew! I started working when I was 14 so I know where you are coming from.

Start with thinking about places you like to shop at or go to. Working at a store where you get a discount comes in handy plus you won't mind going into work because you like the products they offer.

Alternative ways is looking for landscaping jobs, painting, light construction or maintenance. These are great industries to gain valuable job experience that will last a lifetime. As well as if you plan to go college, you can build your own business and make side cash.

Going out to apply for a job is easy - take 2 pens (black ink), hit the pavement (or drive) to the nearest mall or stores and ask for an application. Look in the newspaper in the want ads section too. There's a lot in there!

Places you can get decent hours and pay include:
Costco/Sam's Club
Walmart
Target
Grocery Stores (some of them are union so the pay scale is higher)
Best Buy
Moving Companies
Cell Phone stores (T-Mobile, Cingular, Sprint)
Dealerships - service/parts department

Some of these places have high foot traffic so finding someone who is serious about doing a good job is hard.

You can always do the Fast Food thing but you will get a chance to get cool employee discounts and possibly meet new people working at some of the ones I mentioned above.

Good luck!

I think if you are 16 you should take a commision only sales job. Not only will you have fun, you'll also probably make better money then working at a resturant (unless it's an upscale resturant). Aside from that when you graduate highschool and you already have two years of sales under your belt the likelyhood of you getting a good job will be alot higher. My suggestion is to search for a local marketing group or contact a care dealership just to get in.

work on your resume and make it an excellent one to get job, which suits your interest. You should take the help of consultant to make an attractive resume. Then You should submit your resume to leading jobsite like www.monster.com, www.careerbuilder.com. Also you should consult local placement consultant in your area. In the meantime, look out for an option to work online. Although it wont pay you like full time job but you can make extra cash in your spare time. I am a part time worker doing work online at home, so I would like to share a link where you can make $600-$1500 in a month working at home. The work need to be done is posting/answering a discussion and uploading any photo/image of your interest. For details visit

I will publish few more genuine site in couple of weeks, where you can earn money. You may also write to me at talkofmoney@rediffmail.com (Note: When u are planning for a home based online work, be careful because most of them are scam and ask you to pay initial money. never pay money to any such site.)

make sure you dress presentable and just walk in to a store or restaurant and ask to speak with a manager. Ask the manager if they are hiring and if they are ask for an application. Fill it out and return it as soon as possible.
