What a great question!
I've always wanted a gender neutral name, though for different reasons. I'm not much of a gender-bender but I am a big lesbo and thus enjoy thinking of myself as being a little macho. My mother gave me just about the most feminine name possible, so I switched it with my last name (I didn't want a completely 'new' name either) - Reilly. It's generally a boy's name, but I love it as a first name.
Anyway, back to you!
How about El? It could be short for Alistair, Ellias, Elise, Alice ... etc.
I came across a gender-neutral-name-generator recently, which you could take a look at - http://www.dadcafe.co.uk/resources/baby-name-generator.php ... I have no idea how they 'generate' the names, but they come up with some pretty cool gender-neutral results. I had lots of fun!
And .. I know you don't want to make up a completely new name, but have a look at this list anyway, it may help you a little:
Addison -Much more popular for girls than boys.
Alex -Alex just barely makes it on the top 1000 for girls, but is a top 100 boys name.

Good luck, hun! xx

Although its not popular, the name London can be neutral. If you are looking for E, then I think Emerson is a good one.

My personal favorites: AJ, Max, Alex
and i like Lane...like someone suggested above.
try combining initials...like your first name with your middle name and so on..
if not, you can pick a completely different name. it'll give you a new sense of identity. so much funnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!
