"The Layer Cake" also it has been turned into a movie starring Daniel Craig.
Bernard Cornwell's 'Sharpe' series of books are great if you like military adventures. Start with "Sharpe's Tiger." A number of the books have been turned into a television mini-series starring Sean Bean, but the editing down really makes the shows disappointing.

I just finished Lisey's Story, although I won't comment on Parts 2 and 3 until there are the proper threads. But I have to just have to say that I couldn't stop reading it - so totally unexpected and absolutely compelling!!

i really like an author from the 1940's named Nevil Shute. the settings are either england or australia. no sex or profanity. his books are all paperback-like novels and you can only get them from a used book store. the pied piper is my favorite but there are a bunch of them, all good. try and see if you like him. not for everyone.
