What a fiendishly difficult question. We humans love to rate and catergorise, I'm just the same - but the best. No it isn't possible, may as well ask which is my favourate child, or landscape. Here are my favorites that spring to mind, with short, crass reasons included in brackets - War and Peace (moved by the courage of the characters, insight into the mentality of the soldier/hero, Napolean well and truly knocked off his pedestal), Birdsong (brings home the true horror of the trenches and completely changed my view of remembrance Sunday!!), Life of Pi, Lord of the Rings(just plain enjoyable - especially at 12 yrs old), Tale of Two Cities (best ending ever), The Brothers Karamasov (amazing insights into human nature), The Idiot (the pretensions of society laid bare) Farewell to arms (incredibly simple style with the saddest of endings). Like I said , just what comes to mind, I could go on and probably will at a later date(sorry)

Count of Montecristo by Alexander Dumas. The hero is Edmond Dantés, a young French sailor who, falsely accused of treason, is arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned in the island fortress of Château d'If. After staging a dramatic escape he sets out to discover the fabulous treasure of Monte Cristo and catch up with his enemies. A novel of enormous tension and excitement, Monte Cristo is also a tale of obsession and revenge, with Dantés, believing himself to be an `Angel of Providence', pursuing his vengeance to the bitter end before realizing that he himself is a victim of fate. The author did a great job describing the emotions of the prisoner.Disbelief, denial, self pity, madness, apathy and finally hope.
I don't want to be any of the characters. All the good guys suffer a lot of pain and the bad guys get to suffer at the end.
Dresden file book series by Jim Butcher. There are 8 books in the series beginning with stormfront. It narrates the story of Harry Dresden, chicago's only professional wizard who works as a detective. He stands between the general population who is ignorant about the supernatural world and the monsters - vampires, werewolves, fallen angels, fey. He is aided by Bob,a talking skull.Karrin Murphy-a police officer and Thomas-a white court vampire.

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R.Tokien. My favorite character in the LOTR is Gandalf, and that is who I'd want to be. I think it would be awesome to be a wizard. Of course it might be nice to be an Ent too, and have lots of time to just amble around the forest taking care of the trees.

Mine would have to be" I Don't Want To Live This Life Anymore"
written by Nancy Spungen about her daughter Deborah Spungen and her rocky relationship with Sid Vicious of the punk rock group the ":SexPistols" which was the basis for the movie..."Sid and Nancy" with Chloe Webb and Gary Oldman.,. great book...
also I would have to pick Phillip K ***** " do androids dream of electric sheep" which became " Blade Runner" and "American Hardcore" which was about the 1980 to 1986 hardcore punk movement in america..which became a documentary this last year....ok, I picked three but they are great finds...

My favorite book of all time is 'Phantom of the Opera' by Gaston Leroux. Erik, the Phantom, is my favorite character. I absolutly love him! I'd most like to be Christine, I mean, she had a beautiful singing voice, and Erik and Raoul both loved her. But out of all the characters I'm most like the Persian. He always seemed to be in the middle of everything, and he was the only one with any sense out of the whole group.

MINISTRY OF FEAR, BY Graham Green. For a novel set in the gloomy days of London bombings during WWII it has surpisely simple straight forward and charming main character of Stephen . the plot is tight and Mr. Greene never wastes words. One of his best and most highly enjoyable.

This is such a common question but I never fail to answer it because every time I come up with a different answer -- dpending on my mood or circumstances. I am not big on Soth Asian literature, but I loved Jayasree Mishra's Ancinent Promises. I associate myself with the main character Janu -- flawed, but human.
