I am not quite done with it yet, but I am currently reading "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" by Susanna Clarke, and I am enjoying it tremendously. It's her first novel, and it won the Hugo Award, which should tell you something about its quality. (The Hugo is awarded for best sci-fi or fantasy novel).
Give it a try, as I find it very engaging. I don't normally read fantasy, but it really isn't heavy on the fantasy. It deals with magic, and it's a fun read.

City of Tiny Lights by Patrick Neate. It takes place in London, but the main character is Indian so it gives the story a different twist.

I just finished Lisey's Story, although I won't comment on Parts 2 and 3 until there are the proper threads. But I have to just have to say that I couldn't stop reading it - so totally unexpected and absolutely compelling!!
