Here is a list of things that I bought for my baby (who is now 9 months) and thought were worth the money.
moterised Baby Swing (they love the rocking and gives you a few minuetes to prepare dinner etc)
Angel Care monitor (it is a sound and movement monitor)
Small stroller (big prams are great but now that she is getting bigger it's much easier with a small one)
Activity center (great when they get to be about 4-5 months as there supported and have heaps of fun playing)
electronic Forhead themoeter
Bassinettes are good but don't spend a fortune as you don't use it for to long
Mirror for you car that lets you see the baby in the back without having to turn around
Buy nappies when there on sale and keep the receipt so whrn they grow out of the size you bought you can exchange them for the right size
If your wife is planning to brestfeed but doesn't mind having a break eg. if you go out to dinner (lots of resturants don't have parent rooms and if she feels uncomfortable feeding in public) you can buy formula in sachets so you don't open a tin and waste it you just use a sachet.
bottles and teats in different sizes when there on sale.
muslin and fleece wraps
cloth nappies to throw over your shoulder when burping
I had a dual bath and change table I really liked it as I could wheel it around and could take her straight from the bath and put her on the change table. They do grow out of the bath by about 7months but i'm still glad i bought it
pawpaw ointment is great for everything and is a natural product
mittens as baby scratches themselves and it's hard to cut there nails
I bought a car seat that works from the day there born till there about 3 but if i was to do it again i would of bought a removable capsuale as well, as you have to wake them with a car seat and if you are getting in and out of the car alot it is a pain.
when there old enough to sit in a shopping trolley you can get these covers theat cove the entire sitting area and the handle of the trolley so your little one doesn't suck on the handle (gross!!) I love mine
When there first born there isn't much that they need other than clothes, nappies, wraps, bed and a bath. it's when they start getting older that the items start adding up. Hope I was able to give you a few ideas, best of luck and years full of happiness

As a neonatal intensive care unit nurse I just would just don't waste your money on those gadgets that say they detect periods of no motion in the crib. They are meant to decrease SIDS BUT parents get complacent and they don't really work!
Newborns do like soothing sounds of water/heartbeats. They make a great CD player that clamps to the outside of the crib and you can buy CD's with those sounds that would be great if you want a gadget to buy..otherwise I second the diapers comment!
Congrats and good luck!

Buy a gift for your wife to celebrate the baby!! IF she is having a little girl....buy matching bracelets mommy can wear now and baby can wear a little bit down the road. IF she is having a little boy....buy a bracelet that commemorates her son and that will remind her of her precious one when she is not with him.
Your wife will probably adore a gift like this.
If you are looking more for items to help mom with the baby....or to make mom happy here are some:
There is a blanket that can be used to swaddle baby that has a battery operated heartbeat sound which will be great to soothe baby. I put the link below.
Also, a Boppy is nice if your wife is going to breastfeed!
How about a stereo to put in baby's room so mommy and baby can dance together during those long nights and wonderful afternoons? (I dance with my girls EVERY night....and they love it!) Throw in a CD that has music for baby (Target sells a great one with lullabyes and beartbeats and fetal sounds and ocean waves, too!)
Buy a great swing that moves front and back AND side to side!! They are a little pricier than the normal swings but I have heard great things about them. After the baby has outgrown it you can always hold onto it for the next child or sell it on Craigslist!!
Put together a gift basket with small things for baby. A mirror for the car so mommy can see backwards facing baby in car seat. Toys for the carseat and crib. A really nice (engraved?) photo frame for mommy.....or a digital one that will hold LOTS of pictures. A gift certificate for a portrait studio for baby's first portraits. A gift certificate for a company that actually does pencil portraits (based off pictures).
At her baby shower....or just to surprise her. GIVE HER A DIAPER CAKE decked out in all the little things she and baby will appreciate after the baby is born!!!
Be unique....be creative....GIVE FROM THE HEART!!!

I may not be a nicu nurse but I have the angel moniter and it works very well,as a mother an extra piece of mind is always nice.My son has a heart defect and i do sleep much better at night knowing that my moniter is on.I would also suggest something like the fisher price aqaurium, babes love them and so do moms and dads.A diaper wipe warmer is also very nice, warm bumbs are happy bumbs!!Swings are also very nice for babes, they calm and sooth them very nicely.Hope this was some kind of help.Congratulations and happy shopping!

Well, of course you need all the basics, but some nice extras on a whim would be: a baby book, which has the benefit of keeping mommy occupied too, a bottle rack/brush(there's a nice one by Munchkin), or a music/light show that will hang on baby's crib and play soothing sounds and music at night to help soothe her. If she hasn't had her baby shower yet, remember that you will get some stuff you need there too ;) Enjoy your little one!

There is a very cool rocking hammock style bed that I saw on www.askdrsears.com. Babies are supposed to sleep better and longer in this bed! Trust me, once your wife has this baby, you will be on your knees praying for something to help that precious little person sleep more, so that you can sleep more!
Here is the website:

Congratulations and best of luck to you!

Everytime you leave the house to go shopping for anything, come back with a bag of diapers. Seriously. Buy a different size everytime you go out.
