83 = 50 + 30 + 3 = LXXXIII
Some people wonder if 80 is supposed to be written as LXXX (50 plus 30) or XXC (100 minus 20). The first is correct. Basically, with Roman numerals you want to put off introducing new characters for as long as possible, without using more than three of anything in a row.

In Roman Numerals, 1 is I, 5 is V, 10 is X, and 50 is L. You are allowed to use each symbol up to 3 times in a row. Making Roman numerals is like adding numbers, so we'll take 50+10+10+10+1+1+1=83
L X X X I I I so.... 83= LXXXIII
HOWEVER!
A number like 49 involves putting more than 3 in a row
10+10+10+10+5+1+1+1+1=49
X X X X V I I I I XXXXVIIII WRONG!!
In this case you must use subtraction. To denote this, simply place the lesser digit IN FRONT OF the larger one
50-1=49
L I IL

The Romans always used implied addition. There is no addition sign in the number being represented, but it is implied to add each value represented to arrive at the number, which equals the total values.
XX = 10 + 10= 20, it would never be listed as a subtraction problem like 100 - 80.
They had no character for zero or negatives (that I am aware of).
If a number is written to the left of another number it is subtracted, if it is written to the right it is added. Example,
X = 10, IX = (10-1)=9, XI = (10+1)=11
V=5, IV = (5-1)=4, VI=(5+1)=6
