My father left for Iraq last week, I have been having dreams, where he'd be killed. I have had a few dreams like this... they are graphic and very real, too real for me. There is onething that gets me, in one dream he was fighting outside my house, but it was in Iraq... wierd, Portland - Baghdad....hmm. He was coming to the door as if coming home from work. When he opens the door, the whole family comes to the door. When he opens the door, he is shot through the crest and blood spews out onto the porch, and floor. He dies on the spot. Outside shooting and killing is going on, but I can only look into my fathers glazed, dead eyes.... I have tried thinking of other things, but this happens a lot in my dreams where my father dies... not in the same matter, but killed in war. I don't want to write to him saying I have dreams wheere you die. I think something will happen. My friend's dad came home tonight, 12 hours earlier, he's very 'shellshocked' and somewhat jumpy and paranoid.

I am worried this will happen to my dad...
another dream, my boyfriend is in Iraq... and he is being shot at... and other guys in his unit are being cut down, and he shoots back, but nothing is there. when it's over, he slumps down and dies, after his crest is riddled with bullets. I have had two dreams like this with my dad too. And it is really real, where I wake up sweaty, and crying.

What is it that I can do to stop these dreams... and what can they actually mean... I think they are just my fears getting to me, I confused.

War is hell! your dad may be in danger, or it may just be your fears, getting to you like you said. I thing you've been probably thinking a lot about him so you're going to be having trouble sleeping. I'd try to keep occupied eslewhere. The one of your boyfriend is slightly startling... I think you're wooried about loved ones around you who would fight wars. I think in my dreams anyway, people I know sometimes take occupations that reflect personality or archetypes. In your eyes, he might be a warrior... and he died doing what he saw was right.

You are simply worried about your dad and your worries are coming out in your dreams. Unfortunately, we can't help what we dream, "Who can decide what they dream, and dream I do" (Amy Lee, Taking Over Me, 2003). To tell you to stop worrying about your dad is probably easier said than done. One very positive thing you can do is pray daily for your dad's safety. Also, during waking hours, you can picture his safe return home, See the two of you running to each other in the safety of your nearest airport - throwing your arms around each other and hugging for long awesome moments. Picture him having lunch with his buddies in the Chow Hall (or Dining Facility).

Do write him, but don't mention your dreams. He has enough to contend with. You can tell him when he's been home for a while, and the two of you can ... who knows ... laugh about them.

War is horrible, and people do die, but focus on positive things. Remember the fun you've had with your dad. Focusing on positive things may change your nightmares to wonderful remembrances of past fun. We dream what we focus on throughout the day. Changing your focus may hopefully change your dreams.

This is common, you're worried about him being in a dangerous place. When you write or talk to him, don't tell him about the dreams, just tell him you worry about him and love him.

When people come home from a war zone, it takes them awhile to get back to normal. You have to remember that they just came out of a dangerous area, and they really had to stay alert to keep themselves and their buddies from getting hurt.
