It would not only be fair, it would be JUST! Marty Schottenheimer is without doubt, exception or argument the all time WORST post season coach in the NFL!
Although his lame apologists love to quote his winning figures and percentages during the REGULAR season, this loser has NEVER even won a Conference Championship in over 20 years as a Head Coach. It has been said of him that he "plays just well enough to get his team humiliated early in the playoffs."
The contempt shown in the NFL for his style of playoff football, "Martyball" and his nickname "One and Out Schottenheimer," show all but the most ignorant, just how bad this guy really is. To show you just how bad he is: an incompetent boob like Dan Reeves has been in 4 SBs, Marty in 0! Tony Dungy would have to keep losing in the playoffs for TEN MORE SEASONS to even come close to Marty's abysmal record......
(One and out once again this year with what is arguably the best team in the NFL, oh yeah, he goes, ........maybe a new career as a wine waiter at a Denny's...........)
- Well, of course as I have been saying, it was inevitable, he lost AGAIN. Jason C, the Pats fan puts it very well. This time Schottenheimer not only had the best team this season in the NFL, he had one of the top 3 teams of the past 10 years. He was up against a Patriots team that wasn't even in the top 3 of the best Patriots teams of the past 10 years! If the coaches had been reversed, Belichick in SD and Marty in NE, it would have been 47-3! THAT'S just how bad a coach he really is!

Yes, it would be fair. There's way too much talent on that team for them to lose to the Patriots. LaDainian Tomlinson is capable of single-handedly defeating the Patriots. This is what I think, in spite of my allegiance to the Pats (I am a huge fan, and my hope of hopes is that they hand it to the Chargers): many factors seem to be in the Patriots' favor, not the least of which is the coaching staff's brilliance in preparing the team for big games like this. Belichick has been a godsend to fans all over New England. The system in Foxboro works very well, and Brady is every football executive's dream playoff QB. It is great to be a Pats fan in this era.
One thing that hurts the Pats in this matchup is the loss of Rodney Harrison. Not only does he make great tackles on the field, but he is a Michael-Jordan-type player in that he brings those around him to a higher intensity level. I think Bruschi does this for the defense as well, but Harrison's presence will be missed. If Rivers is on, he'll be able to exploit the holes in the Patriots; secondary. I think that the NE defense will slow LDT down on running downs, but his pass catching versatility should allow San Diego to create some good field position and scoring opportunities. SD's defense matches up well against the Brady-led offense, but I think Brady is going to be playing with twice the ferociousness that he played with against the Jets. It should be a close match, but the Chargers should come out on top, maybe even by two scores.
If it's a very close game (in a SD loss), Schottenheimer might have reason to keep his job. The Patriots have done some amazing things to shock people since Belichick took over and since Brady has been running the field offense. I don't see how this would be unlikely on Sunday, considering the past. You can't fault Schottenheimer for the inexperience of Rivers, which may be SD's downfall (but look what Brady did in '01-'02, so that makes that argument a little weak) in the end. Tomlinson is such a force, though. I think he's more talented than Marshall Faulk was, if just a little bit, and that he presents a greater challenge to the mastermind's ability to come up with schemes.
I'm just hoping for a great football game. The only way I see Marty getting fired is if he takes more control of the play calling and the bolts lose at the hands of a high turnover differential in favor of the Patriots and a poor performance by the SD defense. But who do you replace him with?

yes it would be fair. Schottenheimer always loses big games with every team he was ever with, mostly due to his conservative coaching "martyball". And with all the talent the chargers have this year, if he doesnt win Sunday against the patriots it only shows that he cant compete against other coaches in the NFL. The patriots are an experienced playoff team but if marty hasnt learned anything from all those losses then its time to hang it up.

The game is over as of the time I write this, and the Chargers lose another first round playoff game (i.e. first round playoff game for them). Marty is a good personnel guy, but a head coach he ain't and has proven that once again. TIME FOR MARTY TO GO. I saw a lot of emotional responses here "to keep him," but the FACT remains, he loses big games. And this time he lost a game where he was the CLEAR FAVORITE. He also had some stupid careless player intercept a ball late in the game, stop running, move the ball down to his groin and hold it there... you saw the play.. he got stripped and NE gets new life. (Who was that? Why did he not protect the ball?) And then there was that critical penalty where NE was all but dead on a drive, a big defensive play where NE lost about 7 yards, and then some stupid brainless emotionally immature SD DB who wasn't even in the play head butts a NE player for an unsportmanlike conduct penalty and keeps the drive alive, resulting in 3 points for NE, but also keeping his defensive teammates on the field for a longer period of time. That kind of a player needs to GO! I'll find out who that player is and if he is on the team next year THAT'S IT! I GIVE UP ON THE CHARGERS. If SDC management is so stupid as to allow one player to cause the rest of the team such grief... Anyway, I think you know what I'm saying. This game was very revealing. The Chargers have a great team, probably the most talented team in football. But Marty just isn't going to work as their head coach. I am not a blind loyalty guy. Marty is kind of stupid about some things. After the game he says "the whole team played like men." (Or something very much like that.) WRONG MARTY, "MOST" of the team played like men, but not the whole team all the time. A lot of choking and blunders took place. One player played like an idiotic child (the headbutt jerk), one player got stripped with a critical inteception the team needed, there were a lot of dropped balls in the first half, and you played too many conservative downs on defense. Those 3 and 4 man rush deals don't win big games and tire out the entire defense. And let's face it, he ain't gonna change. He's never going to win a playoff game, because if he could not win a playoff game with this SDC team, there is no chance for him to ever win a playoff game. Marty is a very bad head coach. You need to have a head coach that is good at winning the big game. And who is that? I don't know, but it sure isn't Marty. THERFORE marty must go (along with at least one defensive player). However, Marty should be offered the job of personnel director, as he seems to know talent when he sees it. He just doesn't know how to use it effectivley in big and meaningful games.

Yes- Marty is the choke-master. The only time he got remotely close to the playoffs was with the 93 chiefs and he lost the conference because he would not run Marcus Allen enough. He just proved to the whole country he was still the same guy. He should have went out and ran LT till his legs fell of, but instead he put more weight on a rookie quarterback, who obviously folded under pressure. Point is Marty chokes when it comes to playoff play-calling. That 14-2 record means squat--people only remember the champs!

If they were playing an inferior team then MAYBE. They're going up against one of the BEST coaches of ALL-TIME in the playoffs and a starter who is 11-1 the last 12 playoff games. And even the most hardcore Charger fan will tell you their stadium does not have an antimidating crowd.
If, next year, they finish 14-2 and finish as the #1 seed and lose in the divisonal round, then maybe there's a discussion.
The Patriots are dangerous...

Marty did make some mistakes on Sunday (going for it on 4th and 11) and I think he will lose his job for it, but hey at least say this much for him: It wasn't his idea to let Drew Brees, the MVP runner up, go for absolutely nothing in return.
Postseason numbers
Yds Att Cmp TDs Ints Rating
Brees 243 32 20 1 0 96.2
Rivers 230 32 14 0 1 55.5

No, it would not be fair to do so. Marty brought the Chargers from a poor record last year to the best record in the NFL this year. They're up against a seasoned Pats team that have won the Superbowl multiple times.
I think he's done an outstanding job this year. I am not a Chargers fan either!

Great Question.
Marty does have a 5-12 record in the playoffs. However, if a head coach leads a team to a 14-2 season, not sure if you can exactly fire him the next year.

No way Marty just led the Chargers to the best record in the NFL this season and just because they lose in the playoffs i woudent say there season was a disapointment. Marty is one of the greatest coach of all time and you shoudent blame him for his losses in the playoffs you should look at the people who are actually playin the game.
