Do I specifically need the Xbox 360 wireless usb adapter to sucessfully connect to live, or can I buy just any old wireless usb adapter to connect? Yes I already have a wireless router.

what you can do to save ALOT of money is go to ebay and order a "logitech playlink" i own one and it only cost me like 20 bucks its basically a wireless bridge between your router and xbox.

Not just any wireless adapter will work. You need a wireless adapter that specifically designed for the xbox 360. It will say so on the box.
