How can I tell if my wifes' computer has a disc burner in it? She doesn't know and we've never tried, but when we did it said hardware not found. Not even sure if she had one that it would have been installed. Any takers?

Go to start,
settings
control panel
system
click on "hardware" tab
click on "device manager" button
Then click on the little "+" sign to the left of : DVD/CD-ROM drives
This will list all the optical drives in your pc.
If the name has something like this: DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R or CD-RW, then you have a burner.
If it doesn't or it has something like DVD-ROM or CD-ROM then it is NOT a burner.

Howdy,
Look at the cover of the drive door that comes out when you push the eject button. It will say something on it; if it says compact disc recordable or CD-R or CD-RW it is a cd burner, DVD-r or DVD-RW it is a DVD burner drive. If nothing then more than likely just a regular drive for reading regular CD disc. If the computer is newer than 3-4 years old it prob. does have a burner of some type. Hope that helped.

Click on Start, Control Panel, System. Then click on Hardware and on Device Manager. There you will see the list of all the components of the computer. And you can see if you have a disc burner (CD-WRITER OR DVD-WRITER) or not.

Open My Computer. Right click and select properties of your CD drive. Then, click Hardware tab. The description would say CD-RW, if it is a burner. If it is not a burner, then it would say CD-ROM.
Burners are cheap anyways. They cost about $30 for a DVD-RW drive.

The front of your computer has the drive bays. Look at the narrow rectangular frames on the front of your computer. They should have labels, like CD or DVD or CD R/W. You need the "W" part (write) to burn anything. If you system can't find it, it's not there, unless you've monkeyed around with the computer and disconnected something.

You can take a look at the computer itself, sometimes it says it, if it says CD-ROM it will not burn CDs yet will read them. You can also go to My computer - system information - hardware - device manager, if it says CDRW it means will burn and also read CDs. Same thing applies with DVDs.

They normally say the speed on them you know how fast they turn a CD and if it has three numbers like 48x 16x 48x or something like that then you will know it is a CD writer not just reader or they sometimes say rewritable/writeable or so on or it might just say CDRW and that also means that it is a rewritable drive

Place a writable cdr into the cd rom drive, then drag a file onto the cd rom drive, or right click on a file and select send to --> cdr drive.
If you have xp then that will work for you if you have a burner

if you no longer have the paperwork from pc then simply go to START-CONTROL PANEL-double click system-clcik the tab for hardware-device manager look at what is installed if you are unclear simply type the name into yahoo search and see what it is. many times it lists the model not a true name so search will most times show what that model is. if it is a name brand like hp, dell, gateway, alienware, try going to the site and searching the model of pc it is they should say what is installed. you can buy drives cheap at newegg.com
