I own a 1997 Saturn SC2 1.9 DOHC, and was wondering whether or not my car had a fuel filter on it. At the moment, the fuel pump on my car is taking too long to kick in after I turn the key switch on, which indicates that my filter is either going out or the fuel filter needs to be replaced. The plugs are good as they have been replaced recently, as well as the wires connected to the plugs. Any help is much appreciated.

Correction, I mean to say the fuel pump is taking too long to kick in after turning the key switch on. I am a college student and am looking for a cheaper and lazier approach to fixing the problem than purchasing and replacing a fuel pump.

yes, you may even have two filters. the first filter is usually in the fender well area, along the fuel tank in the rear of the car. a second one can be with in a foot of the fuel injection unit as the fuel piping goes from steel to rubber.

Yes, you do have a fuel filter, engine compartment drivers side. By logic if even if the fuel filter was clogged it will not delay the pump from kicking on, only keep the pump from running after it does kick on you have to build pressure before it will stop. Check for power at pump, if you have power at pump and no action- replace pump also filter for warranty and good measure.

Well the deal is that your fuel pump may be faulty. Since your car is a 1997 model, it still have the fuel filter which also in turns, has a return line for excess unwanted fuel to return to the tank. You may want to tell your mechanic to diagnose your FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR. The FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR is device mounted on the fuel rail of your car, which is located above the cyclinder head. Or, you may want to check your fuel pressure. To check that you need to buy a fuel pressure tester and hook it up to the fuel line. The fuel line access valve is a black cap that is located on the fuel rail and has a Schrader valve, when you open the black cap. The Schrader valve is valve, which is very similar to the valve found on your tires where you put air in. Hook up a fuel pressure tester to that schrader valve and turn the key on. Once the key is on, you can take a look at what is the reading on the fuel pressure tester. I don't know what is the ideal fuel pressure, but you don't want to have a reading of higher than 120 psi!

That "taking too long to kick in" has me wondering what you mean here. Do you hear the pump start running? If the pump is slow to start running, the car has a fuel pump relay that may be failing. However, I am not aware of my SL2 ever needing the relay replaced.

Yes you have a fuel filter, I'm not sure on a Saturn, but I would guess it's located somewhere near the gas tank on the underside of the car.

I would take it in to a repair shop and also have the injectors checked for leakage, or maybe a fuel pump that's getting ready to go bad. Do get it checked out, hate to see you broke down on the road. (As I'm sure you would too. lol)

maybe your fuel tank cap is leaking. if it is the tank wont hold pressure in the lines causing it to not start up right away. your fuel filter can be mounted in 1 of 3 places, on or near the firewall, under the car towards the pass. side rear, or in the tank. if its in the tank it is not replacable, you'd need to replace the pump with it.
