Of course, you can!!! It's not like you are going to die any day soon.. You could do number of things.. Phone work, lite cleaning, hostess (greeter), office work, babysitting, small dog walker, or dog sitter, homesitter..and the list goes on..Process Serve, Bounty Hunt (Who knows DOG the BOUNTY HUNTER might hire you), Private Investigator..get wild, why not?
As far as caring for your dad, there are places that do pay relatives to care for their relatives. You do have to go to classes though. Well, at least here they do. You know like CPR and etc. They pay about a thousand a month..depends on how many hours you put in..

I don't know about medicare but if he is medicaid eligible you might be able to become a "client employed provider." Check with your local Area Agency on Aging to either find out or get a referral to the medicaid provider serving your region.
Yes, I do think you will be hired. I manage a staff of 30. The average age on my staff is older than you. To put that in perspective, I am 37, my assistant is 34 and we have an office assistant who is 19.
The viability of the mature labor market is a matter of demographics. The WWII generation makes up a very small percentage of the work force. Thanks to the pill and Roe v. Wade, Generation X is a tiny fraction of the Baby Boomers. You are a mid-range boomer. The first boomers became Older American's Act eligible last year. While they aren't retiring in drones yet, they are beginning to fray around the leading edges.
The bottom line is, don't be afraid to stick your resume out there. There is a lot more demand than you expect and less supply than you probably think..

I think it depends upon what state you live in on whether or not Medicare will pay you to care for your father. Here in Oregon , for awhile anyway, family members were not entitled to the payment (which is stupid!) I guess they figured that family members SHOULD provide care for free?!
I don't think being 50 is going to prevent you from getting a job nowadays...remember, "50 is the new 40" . Well, that is what the magazines say anyway. I think your attitude is what will get you a job, regardless of your age. Plus, if you feel that you are not getting hired BECAUSE of your age...I'm pretty certain that is illegal.
Good luck on your job search!

I am 46 and decided to hire myself. I started a home business in the health and wellness industry and because of this outstanding product and it's results, I will never go into the work force again. I would be happy to show you how to go about it.

If you have a Wal-Mart around they don't usually discriminate due to your age. The other question, I would call your local social security office or social services provider and ask them, they would be able to better and more truthfully inform you.

Hey.. at the ripe old age of 58 I quit one job and started another (and they were lucky to get me !!). You get hired because of what you can contribute.. not for what you need to learn.

that sucks- try a temp company for settlement artwork. a large number of companies use them because of the temporary want for elements of this type for certain initiatives. also, IT consulting companies-ther are a lot of them. gotta commute, regardless of the reality that for a lot of those. good success to him.
