I read this information for flushing my water heater http://www.cbnbh2o.com/tips/heater.html
it did not outline that the heater should be put into pilot light mode

i flushed the water heater and then it ran for an hour heating before i turned the temp down to manually shut it off..

i became concerned that something might be wrong when it didn't shut off after an hour....thats why i manually turned the temp down on it to shut it off...
We have the temp set all the way up to the highest setting

I do get hot water out of the tap.

I did some quick research and like every site besides the one i read said to put the water heater in pliot light mode...
Did I ***K up the heating elements?

Please help
very worried

If the heater is gas it doesn't have electric elements to screw up. Try turning the temp. setting down and see if the tank shuts off. If the burner shuts down everything should be ok. Set the temp. where you want it and check on it in about an hour. It may take longer depending on how cold the water that filled the tank was.

to drain your heater all you want to do it flush out the sediment at the bottom not empty the whole thing. you only need to flush it for a short time. the water will re fill and thats ok it will take a while to heat up because the heater keeps the water @ a constant temp until there is demand. your draining out the hot water keeping your temp maxed will shorten the life of your heater and waste alot of energy. there are no heating elements in a gas heater
therte are burners. elec heaters have elements, and they can be damaged with no water. not gas burners they dont contact the water. try a water heater website like Rheem.co, or A.O Smith

If you have a gas fired water heater, there should be no problem. You speak of heating elements, as if you have an electric water heater.

The only problem that you might have is if you had the water heater elements heating without water in the tank. What generally happens is that the elements burnout and immediately you know what the problem is because you have no hot water.

I am kind of confused about all situation because I don't know which one you have.

All I can say is that if you have a gas water heater, you are all right. And if you have an electric heater you may still be alright, since you still have hot water.

You have a gas heater and this uses a heat exchanger, it doesn't have elements like an electric water heater has. If you are seeing no leakage, chances are you did no damage this time.

The important thing would be to not empty it (i.e. let the water out and turn off the water coming into it) while the heat is still on. As long as you didn't do that you should be OK.

I do not know the answer to that, but I do know that heating elements are not that expensive....they pretty much screw in (getting the old one out might take a special tool) If you did any damage. I'm soo sorry I do not know but would be really happey to find out everything turned out all right....
