Soccer is about as popular as the Womans National Basketball Assosiation. So who is this guy and why is he getting paid alot of money to kick a ball around in a country that wont even watch him?

Well Beckham was a great soccer player, but has passed his prime. I would say he is one of the more well known ones here in the states. Lets face it, the entire world plays soccer. Soccer is like an industry, more so than any popular sport in America. I believe that the MLS, and the corporations that sponsor MLS teams are trying to popularize soccer to get a piece of the soccer pie. By having a fading star, Beckham, come to the Galaxy numerous positive side effects occur. Europeans realize that the MLS exsists, Americans realize that soccer exsist, and Beckham will attract tremendous ammounts of media coverage. Who knows the Galaxy might become a respectable soccer team.

Apparently soccer is very popular in the US up until a certain age group or so it has been said. He is supposedly trying to encourage more people to take it up. So it is pointless when they are already happy with football, so to pay someone such an obscene amount of money for something is a disgrace, and for him to accept it just shows a complete lack of integrity. Greatest soccer player? you have got to be joking. He is a moron married to an even bigger moron.

David Robert Joseph Beckham OBE (born May 2, 1975) is an English footballer who plays for Real Madrid. He will move to Major League Soccer to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy in the summer of 2007, when his current Real Madrid contract expires on June 30. He will officially become an LA Galaxy player on July 1, 2007[1]. Named a member of Pelé's FIFA 100, he is one of the most famous players in the world, and considered a celebrity even outside the football world.

Beckham is the fifth most capped England player of all time, has twice been the runner up in the FIFA World Player Of The Year Award in 1999 and 2001 and in addition to being the only Englishman to score in three different World Cups, is also only the fifth player in World Cup history to score twice from direct free kicks. He was captain of the English national team from 15 November 2000 to July 2, 2006.

Beckham's career began when he signed a professional contract with Manchester United, making his first first-team appearance in 1992, at the age of 17. While with Manchester United he played a key role in their dominance of the FA Premier League in the 1990's and early 2000's, being pivotal in accomplishing The Treble of the League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in 1999.

He left the club to become only the third Englishman to sign for Real Madrid in 2003, after Laurie Cunningham and Steve McManaman.

In 2006, after England's quarter-final exit at the World Cup in Germany, he stood down as captain and was then succeeded by Chelsea captain John Terry. Beckham was dropped from the England national team selected by coach Steve McClaren on 11 August 2006.

On 10th January 2007, Real Madrid Sporting Director Predrag Mijatovic announced Beckham would leave the club in the summer. On 11th January 2007, Beckham agreed to arguably the largest sports contract in history with MLS team LA Galaxy worth a reported £128million (US$250 million) on a 5 year contract beginning in August after his current deal with Real Madrid expires
