I think America is quite capable of starting wars that have nothing to do with alliance obligations. We might be teetering on the brink an an Iranian one even as I type this started by good ol' fashioned international violations perpetrated by Bush and company.

The coming future was will be with China. America will not have to deal with the North Koreans as Kim will self-destruct. The Chinese have spied on our technology for tens of years. Do not let the apparrantt loosening of control in China fool you. This is a strong Maoist state and when the time comes all the freedoms will be yanked back. I believe that it would be a mistake to take on China but the Russians will most certainly help in the war as Russia and China have long been foes. If you want a preview of what future war will be like, read 1984 by Gerorge Orwell. War will be with us always. The Vast Machine has dictated that.
