Pandas aren't moors, they're pandas. Moors are all black with telescope eyes, pandas are usually orandas that are black and white. I suppose you could have a panda moor, but I've never heard of that. The determining factor would be the telescope eyes. It's the special breeding that makes them expensive. Breeders have to play with genes and keep breeding more and more of the two colors in and it takes time. In the event your heart was set on that cuddly looking little black and white cutie, be aware of one thing with pandas, because of this gene mutation, often pandas will revert a little and add a red, orange or a little gold around their head area as they mature.

Only black telescope eyes are Moors. A Panda is a Panda, it could be a butterfly Panda, but not a Panda Moor. MANY places peddle Pandas that are NOT Pandas.

But to answer your question, TRUE Pandas are expensive for the same reason small popular dogs are expensive. They are trendy, not to common and expensive to breed. Luckily for Pandas mass producers of fish are not commonly breeding this type yet so you're actually getting fish from breeders who care about health, maintenance and cull their fry. This takes time and care. You want to find expensive fish? Try searching for a White Veiltail.

GOOD goldfish are expensive. Under $20 for any size, consider it like buying a puppy mill puppy.

If you are buying a good quality goldfish, which should only be being bought over 2 inches, with proper body, fins, tail, scales and colour; you should be paying $75 plus. If you look into show quality fish $200 is cheap.

My big goldie tank is sitting with probably $1000 worth of fish in it. Breeding quality fish is expensive and time consuming. However, most people don't care about crooked backs, bent rays, cloudy eyes or hooked scales.

Goldfish are Goldfish, plain and simple. There are different varities with slightly different care, but they are all in the same family. It all comes down to breeding, and I'm assuming you are talking about the Panda Telescope goldfish for 24.99 at PetSmart, or something similar.

Goldfish of that size will retail for larger amounts of money because most people do not realize that the baby "fantail" goldfish is the same thing. We all were raised on goldfish bowls and don't know how to grow them to the 24.99-49.99 range. Breeding does play a part in price, but not as much as size and popularity.

The larege red ryukin goldfish is the same as the small. And if you notice, the pandas are the same price as the large orandas. People will pay more for big fish becuase they think they are special. Most pet stores also have a mark up of 90% on the price of fish. They don't make a 90% profit because that money goes to pay for housing, food, supplies, and employess, but they are VERY cheap at cost.

Breeding comes into play more with Koi and Ornamental golds for show. Yep, people show fish. Fish with good color paterns, fin growth, and body shape can sell for tens of THOUSANDS of dollars in Japan. you can even get $500 blue butterfly koi here in the states.

it all comes down to supply and demand.
Hope that helps!

because you are being ripped off! they just want you to think that it is something special, more than likely, it'll change colors and become a red telescope eyed goldfish, anytime you see red and black or black and white goldfish they are simply going through their color change
