The Internet light on the modem goes red when you lose authentication to your internet provider (meaning your username and password was rejected). If this only briefly happened, it was more then likely a small error on their end.

modems suck, but it could have been damage to the wire, or the card might not be connected right, or your internet service went down temporarely, or something else, i would have to look at it to be sure.

Power serge? If it stopped after that its just a normal power flux but if it keeps doing it you probly need a new modem.

If it doesn't effect your service, then does it matter? It may be just a glitch. Otherwise, it may be due to maintainance by the internet company.
