I just wanted to know because of the umbilical cord of the child and all. I used to know, from taking parenting classes but I forgot.

you can give the baby a sponge bath until the umbilical cord falls off, but make sure you wash around the umbilical cord.

Typically it is safe to bath your baby as soon as you would like to. Most hospitals will have a "bathing course" in the nursery before you take the baby home. This shows first time mothers how to handle the cord and the best way to bath baby.
Congratulations and Good Luck!

It does not matter, my two has a bath from day 1 and if you dry the umbilical cord stump gently when they have had their bath you will be right. It helps to relax and sooth the baby. Make it approx 3 in so they can lay in the bath and do not forget to hold the baby securely.

When the cord has healed and is gone. Until don't do anything other than sponge the water on her avoiding the cord area. You don't want it to fall off prematurely. Keep it dry, that is the key to getting it to heal as quickly as possible. Congrats on the new baby!

When the cord stump falls off and is all healed up. Before that, you can still use the tub, just with less water, and be very careful not to get the cord wet.

You can bathe them in an infant tub from day one.... even with the umbilicus attached. Just make sure that you dry out the umbilicus thoroughouly using Q-tips (gently wiping around the cord, not forcing anything).

When the cord heals. It needs to dry out to fall off, so you don't want to get it soaking wet if you can help it.
