drop the lowest string (E) down a whole step so it is a D. use a tuner, or your ear. this way the strings play (open) D A D G, and you have the ability to play even lower notes

You just buy a chromatic tuner and tune the thickest string to low D then tune the three other strings to the standard a-d-g tuning. Or you could just buy a five string if you want the extended low end.
