For second box down: I'm drawing flowers and I took a ruler and measured one inch exactly, used a dime for the part in the center, and drew the petals as symmetrical as possible. People like symmetry. A face that is more symmetrical is considered more beautiful. But my older ones were symmetry was ignored look so much more fluid.

fluidity because even if it is precise if it doesn't have a good flow to it it will look chunky and no one but some engineer will like it just because it is all perfect in its precision only....... you can have both but the fluid motion of any peice is the ticket

Make art in whatever way makes you happy, but keep in mind that rulers were invented for engineers.

Nature doesn't use a ruler... in nature you will see balance, but symmetry is very rare. Symmetry and balance are not always the same thing.

And rulers can't put SPIRIT into your art.

That all depend on your goal. What is it you are trying to achieve in your artwork?

I have a friend whose drawing ability is so refined and perfect. He has never created an exciting painting, but he is very successful in rendering exact images.

My drawing skills are a lot less than his in that i can render an impressionist version of an image. He will get a job as an illustrator a lot faster than I will, but people look at my paintings and call me "mad talented"

So I guess it is a combination of things. What are you trying to achieve? What works better for your style of painting/drawing?
