The Astros recently signed him to a minor league contract. Also, what do you think about Houston's chances next season?

As of right now we are relying on a guy who has yet to prove himself in the big leagues (Lane) and a rookie who had a great 2nd half last year (Scott) in RF which is Hidalgo's position. I guess it depends on those two's performance.

I didn't know he went back to the Astros! I guess a player like that is worth a gamble, but he really hasn't performer since the year 2000. He basically kept getting chances based on the strengh of that one monster year. BUT, he's only 31, so if he has been working out, maybe it's not too late to make a comeback... stranger things have happened. It's only a minor league contract too, so no big gamble.
I like the Astros position players and pen, I think they could use another starter, getting Woody Williams does nothing for me.

Honestly, I think Richard Hidalgo has been a fringe-player his entire career. He had one exceptional year and everything else has been mediocre at the very best.

The Astros are better off letting younger, unproven guys from the farm system take their crack at the outfield job because they have the potential to be around for a long time and help the ballclub, Hidalgo is not a long term fix. He's probably a fifth outfielder who will pinch-hit and get about one start a week in platoon situations.

As far as the Astros as a team, I think the offensive core with Biggio/Berkman/Lee/Ensberg (if healthy) and some of the other youngsters will be pretty solid, but unless they really pick it up the run support won't be enough to help out the pitching staff. If the team couldn't score enough runs to keep Roger Clemens from losing games where he'd give up one earned run, it's hard to believe a rotation with Jason Jennings and Woody Williams in the two and three slots will fare any better.

The Cubbies have improved a lot. The Brew-Crew is getting better and more mature every season. The Reds made strides last season, but will come back down to earth. The Pirates had a strong second-half surge led by Freddy Sanchez, but they aren't for real. The Cards are coming off a World Series win but haven't finished filling out a rotation that was spotty all last season and both Edmonds and Rolen are just another year older.

It's hard to predict where the 'Stros will finish, but it is safe to assume that if they don't take the division the playoffs are out of the question. The West looks to have two, maybe three strong teams and I'd expect the East to produce some teams that hang down the stretch as well.

I think as of right now the Astros are probably the second best team in their division, depending completely on how well that young Brewers team gells this season and whether or not Ben Sheets is finally healthy. If he's healthy, then they might slip to third behind the Cubs and Brewers, but right now I'd say second behind the Cubs with the Brewers nipping on their toes.

Apparently Hidalgo has been working out and is in good shape, but his time is over and passed. Even if he does crack the lineup, dont expect anything.

As for the stros, it doesnt look good. Starting pitching is key, and they dont have much.. Losing pettite and clemens(assuming he decides to go back to NY with andy) is going to be a huge loss. Oswalt is good, but the rest of the rotation is not. The cardinals are coming off a world series, in which, in reality they probably shouldnt have even won, very fortunate to get past the mets, but besides the point, they did win and will still compete in the central. Then you have the new cubs, I know money doesnt buy wins, but they added some serious talent in soriano and other upgrades. A lineup that has ramirez, lee, soriano just to name 3 has the potential to be very potent. Even Milwaukee and Cincinatti improved last year. I can see the central being tight again, or the cubs, yes the cubs pulling away from the rest. Cant see houston finishing higher then third in the central.

Hidalgo will have a good chance to play, but probably wont make much of an impact. The Astros are usually pretty good. Oswalt is a stud, but beyond that, their pitching staff is questionable. And who knows what Clemens will end up doing.

The Astros have a chance at the central if they can make a strong start. The thing is that the Astros always make a bad start to the season and have to play catchup the rest of the way.
