An example: I have a co-worker who is amazingly pretty. Her skin is so dark it is almost black and she includes African jewelry and some African clothes in her wardrobe. One would think that she celebrates her heritage. but when I commented that she looks like a gorgeous African woman, she seemed upset and told me that she is part American Native. I was surprised,

If she plays up her African heritage, then denies it, is this some kind of double standard?

yes i feel that this woman feels ashamed of her African heritage and would prefer to be associated with the Native Americans. People tend to get all offended everytime someone mentions the word "dark" "black" "afro" "*****". I guess that they associate "darkness" with oppression.

I use to think the same thing with other people but then when i thought about it i actually realized that these people (mixed) actually appreciate ALL their mixes...and so for your friend she loves her African-American side and her Native-American side equally and so to be called one or the other would be to her like she hated her other half which to her would be upsetting...even though it was not your intentions....Nothing you did wrong btw....its just the fact of life she should be aware of....i mean come on how were you suppose to know.....i find it oddly surprising why she should be upset at all since this must be common....interestingly, if she's heard that comment before then maybe it has manifested itself to be upsetting because maybe her appearance seems to say to the world that she doesnt enjoy her native side as much....I think though you won points for complimenting her but it got lost in trnaslation...you could still get her by doing something surprising...like doing a native-american rain dance in front of her ... hahahaha...(dont do that)

I don't think she was denying her heritage, just telling you she had American Native in her blood too.

I don't think you said anything wrong to her. It's obvious she might not have understood or considered how genuine your compliment was.

Please understand, not all African American women or multiracial women show themselves friendly. I don't know why?

I'm not like that at all. I never mention my ethnicity's unless asked. I would have just said thank you.
