to make a long long story short, i have a cichlid that is suffering from ammonia poisioning--he is floating belly up and sometimes laying on bottom, still belly up. Is there any chance of recovery? he has been like this for 36 hours. I think he is floating this way because of the gases that are released in the body cavity as internal organs are destroyed by the poisioning, I may be way off, I hope so, is there any help for him???? He also seems to have fin rot, but thats really the least of my worries right now.

He may be too far gone, but if there is any chance of saving him, you need to isolate him in a hospital tank. Get the hospital tank water ph balanced, get some maracyn and put it in the hospital tank. Don't panic, the maracyn makes the water yukky yellow cloudy. Make a high level salt (sea salt, not iodized!) bath of about 5 tablespoons to a gallon of water in a separate, clean bucket of water and dip your fish for about 10-15 seconds, I don't think he could handle longer, then take him out and put him in the hospital tank. After that, it's in the big fish in the sky's hands.

The fish probably has a disease called "Malawi Bloat" there isn't a lot that can be done, but you might try a dip in an Epsom Salt bath. That is the only thing I've heard of that may help. If ammonia poisoning is a contributing factor, then start doing small water changes every day until the ammonia numbers come down. Change no more than 10% a day, then keep the ammonia down by regular gravel vacuuming and water changes.

It seems like he may die, but you never know. I had a "super" fish when I was a teen that survived 2 diseases (some sort of fin rot with his skin going translucent with spots and everything.) It may have been a really strong fish that I had, but he was floating belly up too and looked like he'd go any minute and then suddenly he was fine. I did take notice of what his symptoms were and asked the pet shop and they gave me some medicine to put in the tank and that must be what helped my fish. Maybe try that. Hope he lives for you; that is really sad news.

The only chance your fish has is if you get his water quality as high as possible and keep it that way. I don't know about the gases in his body cavity and all... he's probably so bad off he won't survive, but if you'll change his water carefully so you don't stress him out more than you have to, and test the water parameters twice a week or so so you can change again at the first sign of toxins, you've given him the best chance possible.

Good luck. :(

It's possible that he may recover, it depends on how much damage was done.

Make sure to give him the best water conditions possible and give him time.
