Both are excellent reccomendations, but personally, I would reccomend Slaughterhouse-Five, or anything by Kurt Vonnegut. His use of black humor and the sometimes outrageous situations that his characters find themselves in makes all of his books hard to put down. Like Orwell, Vonnegut's works have a lot to do with current events of the time, but because Vonnegut's works are much more recent, it will probably be a lot easier for you to understand the themes and symbols of Slaughterhouse-Five. Vonnegut is hilarious, and my personal preference, but you can't go wrong with either choice.

1984 is a visionary work that still has relevance and prescience almost 60 years after it was written. I don't think Slaughterhouse V will have quite the same standing in another 25 years.

I think that 1984 will be more generally preferred, but Slaughterhouse V will broaden your horizons. You could totally read both... save one for later and pick one for now.

They're both very dark in their plot and what they say about human nature. but Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse-V" is no doubt the funner read. For just plain crazy fun, read his "Breakfast of Champions".

~Has it occured to you that you could read them both? Or did your teacher prohibit that. Might take the better part of a weekend to read both, but what the heck, The Care Bears are in reruns and the mall closes early.
