If you are not familiar with the registry hierarchy then don't go there.
If you are really wanting to make changes then export the original key before making changes. If you make a change and it doesn't work correctly, you can execute the *.reg file and import the information again.
If the key is located in HKEY_Local_Machine > Software .. then it is relately safe to delete. There are probably other entries in the registry but the Local Machine > software location stores an entry for each application installed. You might also look under HKEY Current User > Software, there will also be an entry there for the software if the uninstaller didn't remove it.
Good luck!

very general answer, if you have deleted program via uninstal or through windows add\remove , yes you can delete it, but you really need to know what you are upto before you muck about in registry
have a look at this program it may be a better way to go

If you're not computer savvy, forget it and don't even mess with it. Registry keys are just things that refer to a program, not the program's components.

it's safe ans useful if you know what you are doing...for that situation, use a registry cleaner or checker, like registry mechanic to clean useless or leftover keys...
if you want to edit it, make a backup first...
