I am a lady and the onlyearning member in the family I ahve retired but I have taken up a job again I would like to know how can I invest a few thousands in shares and mutual funds which can get me some additional income for the fee of my college going girl

I can tell you this; don't get advice for something this important from Yahoo answers. Go to reputable investment counselor or better yet go to ten different ones. Then decide VERY carefully what course is appropriate.

You might want to read "The Little Book that Beats the Market" - this is a good short book that will teach you the fundamentals of value investings. You might also want to see what the best investors are buying and selling at http://www.top10traders.com - this is a free site that lets you create a portfolio of stocks with $100,000 in "play" money. If you are looking for long term returns then invest in shares of good company and if you you want fast returns then invest in Forex trading.
