This mother of five kids, ages ranging from 2 to 14, stands as bread winner because her hubby has a degenerative neurologic illness. It feels comforting to know that while wife is out at work, hubby takes care of the kids - bathes them, feeds them, reviews lessons with the ones in school, never mind if the house is an absolute mess when wife comes home. I really think one of the parents should actually be hands-on with the children, be physically there for them. It never fails. But the problem is when wife is all burned out at work with an impossible boss; the pay is not enough to meet the bills, or to give to the older children even their daily school allowances, or to set some money aside for medical emergencies - wife has to literally scour the kids' coin banks just to ensure that there is food on the table until the next pay day. And it is sooooo depressing that wife and hubby cannot even watch a movie together because the money has to be used for more urgent needs.

With hubby's illness, don't you qualify for some sort of aid, financial, food, or nursing assistance? Ask. The worst thing they can do is tell you no.
They rent movies at the library...reading together may be fun too.
Some churches offer parent's night out gatherings and so on.
Older kids don't need money, it just gets them into trouble.Work out something where if the older ones watch the younger ones a few hours a week, they get some small treat...yeah, I know...they should do it for free, but let's be fair here.
Good luck to ya!!

Sad story and I am sorry to hear this but I'm not sure what you are asking ? The hubby in question sounds as though he is not capable of doing more than he is. And the way I grew up is a family made sacrifices together and helped whenever needed where ever needed. Have times changed that much ?

Get help! There are lots of resources out there for someone in that situation. It is really great to have a parent home (speaking as a stay at home mom). There really is nothing better than a parent at home. But, with that said, if everyone is suffering, maybe if some reliable family lives close enough and is willing to help out, let them! Maybe dad could find something part time (like Wal-mart) just to make ends meet. Pray hard and tithe are also my first options, but not everyone is open to that, but it ALWAYS, ALWAYS worked for me and my family, and not only am I able to stay home, I am able to stay home and still have things we not only need, but our wants are met as well! Best of luck to you.

This is a good thing that he does this for you... Maybe you should get a higher paying job or one with more hours.... ALso go for food stamps and help if you dont feel you have enough money and since he is sick... He also needs to be getting disability from SSD if he is handicapped.... I am sure there are things that can be done to improve this situation.

Um...so how is it that you're wanting to "deal" with him? Sounds like he's doing what he can do.
BTW, this could have easily been role-reversed; one bread winner in today's culture means you have to sacrifice financially, unless you're making great $.
