Get a ride on toy if she doesnt have one already, we did this when my cousin turned one and she was so thrilled or one of those rocking things. Im not sure when the ages for those ball pits start but we bought an 18 month old one and that was a big hit too. I would check out fisherprice.com and the little tykes website for great toys.

I recommend a water table! I think Little Tykes makes one, and they should have them at Target or Walmart for anywhere from $30 to $80. Little kids LOVE playing in the water, and it would be fun to do so outside of bathtime. You can get some pretty elaborate ones, and you can use sand in them too. Of course, sand might not be the best idea in the house, and depending on where you live it may be too chilly right now for outdoors. But water is pretty harmless, and some spills won't hurt anything. The fun your daughter would have would be worth it!
Also just saw the answer above mine, and a ball pit is another great idea. My son has one and he absolutely loves it.

How about making a time capsule. You could have everyone bring something to the party to put in it bury it on her first birthday and open it on her 18th!! Its a gift that will mean something to her someday she'll never remember some 50 dollar toy.

I think a nice hard bound book is a great keepsake. Make sure it is a picture book. You can begin reading to her every night if you do not already do so. I write on the inside cover the date and occasion the book was given to my daughter for. She is now an avid reader (8 and 1/2). :-)

Get her one of those toys she can ride or walk behind. My daughters had a little car. It helps them learn to walk and they have a great time on them. My daughters still play on them and they are 5 and 3/

I got my twins a ball pit for Xmas and they LOVE it. They are pretty cheap too. Around $40 at ToysRus.

I agree with Chi C! We got my son a ball pit for his 1st birthday and he LOVED it. Just make sure you watch her while she's in it.
