If someone has provided an "above and beyond" service for you on the job, it is always a good idea to document your thanks. You're noting your boss' professionalism, as well as your own.

You might begin with something like the following, with appropriate salutations, etc.:

"It would be remiss of me if I did not take this opportunity to express my appreciation for ........"

You might conclude with something like.... "Your expertise was invaluable in enabling me to resolve the problem as well as possible."

- Be clear and brief
- Avoid gushing
- copy the supervisor's boss and/or HR
