Each time it was the clone. Once he realized he could clone himself he countinued to make them.
There is a scene where he and the clone look at each other and he shoots it.

"the real magician" killed the clone in the water tank every night during his performance so the real guy could be transported, and nobody would notice about the machine and what it could do, cause he wanted to be the best.

It was the clone. Jackman talks about how his plan took courage because he never knew for sure he wouldn't wind up in the tank. Only the original could give that speech.
