Most likely what your smelling is Antifreeze. If you smell something when you turn the heater on it is typically a sign of a leaking heater core.

The heater pulls in air from the outside of the car at the bottom of the windshield. The smell is coming from your engine. Check it when it's cold. When it's hot the gas will evaporate before you can see it.
