Be prepared! The first 3 days are HELL!! I cried when I had nic. fits. I was a total B*tch. I was miserable. But I really wanted to quit so I stuck with it.
Helpful tips:
-Nic fits usually last 3 to 5 minutes. It'll feel like forever, but remember it will pass. You just gotta get through it.

-Brush your teeth after meals. Grab a mint, piece of gum or glass of water to help replace the after meal smoke.

-Keep gum, mints, suckers, hard candy on hand to have something to keep your mouth busy when you would usually smoke.

-Find something to keep your hands busy too. If you smoke while on the phone, doodle on a notepad, work on a puzzle, pace, do dishes,... something, anything to keep yourself busy when the "habit" part comes into play. Thats tough to break too.

-When you find yourself really wanting a cigarette try to do something physically active. Go for a quick walk, do jumping jacks, sit ups whatever. Not only will you distract yourself during your craving. You most likely will find yourself a bit out of breath. Which will remind you why you need to quit.

-Remind yourself that this will get easier. It really will.

-Think about all the money you will be saving. Set aside the money you would've spent on your smokes. Put that money aside in a jar. If you buy smokes daily, or by the carton. Set it aside. When you do officially quit and have no desire anymore reward yourself. Spend that money on something you've been wanting. You deserve it!

Do it COLD TURKEY! You do not need anything, just plain old will power, everyone has it they just don't use it. I did this over 25 years ago and it worked....started off as a bet between friends to see who would cave first, we put in 20$ apiece and a time limit and the winner gets the $$$, and only 2 of us were the strongest, so we split it. To be really truthfull with you, after you quit it can still drive ya crazy sometimes and you will love to have one but don't cave in, then there are times when the smell is enough to satisfy you or to just make you sick to think that you did that to yourself and that you smelled so bad and had no regard for your non-smoking friends....you know bottom line is that you just have to do it for yourself and no one else, that's what matter's..YOU. Best of Luck to you and remember "only the strong survive"!!

Truthfully, you really have to want to quit I quit about two years ago cold turkey, the reason, I had a baby, that was mine. You have to really really want to do this or it WILL NOT work. So I guess my answer is just throw them out and ignore the horrible pain that is quitting ha-ha trust me I know but also know that in time you will look and feel better as well as smell better :) Good luck!

i just wquit about 2 months ago. the nicotine cravings leave you with a lot of aniety and jitteriness. the nicotine withdrawl lasted fro about 2 weeks. trouble sleeping at night too. went to the dr and got some xanax to help for those 2 weeks. now i feel great and don't have any more of the withdrawl symptoms. just goes to show how addictive it is when you try to quit! good luck

The patches worked for me.

Just make sure you get the right step (dosage), and then follow through with them!

My friend didn't like the patches, said they made him feel a little ill. But he said he DID like the niccorete (spelling?) gum. I hear the gum comes in a fruit flavor now that actually tastes good too!

Just remember to get a patch out or some gum out and have it ready to go first thing in the morning when your cravings are bad. Remember, you're in control, not your cravings!

Good for you for wanting to quit!!! My father quit when I was 13( am now 36) he used acupuncture.... they put little pins in certain spot in your ears
when a craving hit ... you rubbed the pin.. which triggers the body's natural cure for the cravings and it goes away (the pins fell out after about two weeks)... at least that was how he explained it to me then... he has not smoked since!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

I smoked for 6 years, now I'm a healthy non-smoker, since Jan '05. Grapefruit juice, sunflowerseeds, and excercise daily worked for me.

cold turkey, its horrible for three days, but worth it. you don't need any money you just need to be strong. no risk of getting addicted to anything else.
