how do you get your tv romote and your cable box remote to work together on the cable remote?

you need to get the codes to program it...my tv came with a manule that had codes just had to look up the cable box make and go from there

I'm a billion years old with more letters after my name than in it. I've got TV, Video, DVD and satellite remotes and I haven't got the foggiest on how to get them all to work off the same flippin' machine which proves that education isn't everything.
I hope that if you are young, you will invent an easy to install remote that will work in every country, on every machine. It would make the next generations lives so much easier and make you a trillionaire.
