Can't live off it anyway so what is the point.

Nowadays 10.00 an hour wouldn't pay the bills so what the hell will a dollar make.

First, the House passed the minimum wage hike, it has not passed the Senate or the Presidents desk.
Second, it only raised it to $5.85 the first year, $6.55 the second year, and $7.25 the third year.
Third, the increase equals out to be $1456 a year per employee. When you figure in the increase for the employers part of SS, and the increase in workers compensation, that is based on wages, it will figure around $1700 per employee increase for the employer.

Ten emplyees would be an increase of $17,000, 25 employees would be an increase of $42,500. Do you honestly think the employer is going to eat this loss, or pass the cost onto customers in the form of price increases? This is going to happen for the next three years. Sounded good unless you already made more than the minimum wage hikes, then your dollar will buy less! Where is the compassion from the left for those that make more than minimum wage? If they were serious, why raise it over three years instead of one? If there is no negative effect, why not $10 an hour?

It would be good for the states that are still paying 5.15/hr., but you know if they raise the wage, then the prices of other things will go up also. Food, Clothing & etc. Because they make it where a person can live on minimum wage by getting the things they need but not letting them have the things they want unless they work 2 or 3 jobs.

Raising minimum wage will just raise the cost of goods and services. I am a small business owner, and if I am required to pay my employees more, I will be required to raise my prices so I can cover my wages. If I don't, I will go out of business because I will not be able to support my family and workers. Large companies will do the same thing. If say M&Ms makes 5 cents on every bag they sell, when you raise the wage by say one dollar like some people are proposing, then they will make maybe if they are lucky one cent per bag. Companies still have to pay taxes on everything. They have to cover building and equipment costs, repairs and replacement. They have to match the amount put into social security that you show on your paystub, that amount will go up in accordance to your pay rate. So in order to keep the margin of profit to a level where they can ensure that they operate in the black, they will raise their prices as the cost of labor goes up. This is why we have inflation. Everyone wants more for doing the same thing every day, year after year.
Wage increases should come because you are adding value to the company by increasing sales, improving a product, or taking on more responsibilities. These things affect the bottom line of a company.... Not how long you have worked behind the cash register, or answered the phones. This is why many jobs have maximum pay rates. If you only work a cash register at a major chain retail store, you should not expect to earn $10.00/hr, even if you have been there 10yrs. You should be trying to learn a different aspect of the company, take on more responsibility, and increase your value to the company. If you were to stop working the cash register, they can hire hundreds or thousands of people to take your place, but if you have moved up and become the store manager, it is harder for them to replace you. Thus you have increased your value to the store, and they will pay you more.

If you don't like the pay you recieve at the job you have, and can't move up, CHANGE JOBS!!!!!! It is not that hard to find work when you are employed, put your resume out, and see what is out there. Companies are hiring all over the country for all types of positions, some are not as fashionable as others, but they probably pay more.

Good luck

James

Why? Twenty three states already have their own minimum wage, all higher than the federal wage. The market should drive the wage. Small businesses will be hurt by this increase, and prices will go up.
It is a loose-loose legislation. This has been the big issue for Democrats what a freakin joke they are. In the meantime, our borders are wide open, vicious criminals are terrorizing our citizens in our towns and cities, and they have done nothing to propose legislation to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. What a bunch of hateful scumbag liers they are, democrats, who needs em?

I think it's pretty stupid for the government to decide how much I should pay or be paid. Its an obvious political gimic to cater to the stupid vote.

To top it off I think it is interesting that the American Samoa was excluded from the minimum wage increase and over 70% of the population there works for companies which are headquartered in the home district of the new speaker of the house. Culture of corruption?

We would not need a minimum wage if corporations had feelings like humans.
