I think we need all kinds of people for balance and diversity. Idealistic people sometimes seem naive and unreasonably optimistic, attributing their own altruistic motives to those who simply do not have them (which could be dangerous). But they also contribute a great deal because they look at possibilities. Sometimes we have to give possibilities a chance and dream big. I am not idealistic, but I admire the gut-wrenching all-out passionate sparkling dreams of those who are. I doubt they are more or less harmful to society than anyone else. Because, by god, at least they will TRY. There are things I won't even try because I already know the outcome.

they are the most beneficial and most harmful... tricky eh?

idealists like Curie, Pasteur and many more have made inventions like penicillin and vaccines that have saved millions of lives...

but at the same time... idealists have created the atomic bomb, machine guns and thought up gas chambers...

ideas may be the most powerful things in the world... and they can be used for good and bad...
